• Applying to McCormick or Medill without a clear engineering or journalism portfolio, and writing supplementals that don't reflect that fit.
• Treating the Rock prompt as throwaway. Admissions reads it closely because it reveals identity.

• Northwestern's essays reward students who name a specific undergraduate school and program. Open by anchoring to your school (Medill, McCormick, SESP, etc.) and a concrete offering within it.
• The Rock tradition prompt is a voice test. Pick something personal, slightly weird, and specific. Avoid the 'I would honor my family' generic answer.
